A Chinese Gang have been jailed after an online gambling scam, netting around $140,000, was uncovered. All the money the gang amassed came from gamblers funds, rather than as a result of game tampering. With roughly 217million online gamblers in China, the Trojan virus that was used by the gang allowed them to steal more than 4 million user names and passwords from online accounts in China, meaning that the gang managed to get access to peoples’ online credit accounts.
The group responsible for creating the Trojan virus, Lu Yizhong and Zeng Yefi, were each handed custodial sentences of three years and two-and-a-half years respectively, whereas those individuals who were responsible for the distribution of the virus, Yan Renhai and Chen Huiting, were both given sentences of 2 years and eight months and 2 years respectively.
Various other gang members were also handed down prison sentences. The gang were also ordered to pay a $122,000 fine between them. Meanwhile, the Chinese authorities will be continuing their cyber criminal stings as they believe there to be at least another 50 individuals involved in the plan to steal money from online gamblers.
The recent succession of arrests come on the back of the implementation of a new initiative by the Chinese government to tighten the net on online criminals, who, within china, are becoming increasingly problematic as there temerity increases- online crimes vary from fraud to blackmail and money laundering.
The arrests were also designed to set an example to other criminals within China, as well as the international community, to show that the Chinese government is serious about tackling online theft and other forms of internet crime. The FBI and the United Nations have recently published a report showing that China and Russia have the highest degree of corruption in the aim of preventing internet crime and that large numbers of criminals go unchecked in these countries, in their report they stated that:
“The cyber-kingpins remain at large while minor mules are caught and brought to rights. Some governments are guilty of protecting their in-country offenders.”
China is therefore hoping these recent arrests can prove to the outside world that Chinese authorities are serious about tackling online crime.
