The Roulette Slide
This move probably ranks second in the top-ten roulette cheats and originates from the Italian casino scene. This cheat was passed from generation to generation, and groups of Italian men would move around the world’s casinos scheming and scamming, they were especially prevalent during the latter part of the 1970’s.
One of America’s most famous casino cheats had run into the team during the 1990’s, before their scam came to light. By some bizarre twist of fate they both found themselves in the same casino at the same time, each attempting to undertake a past-posting move, each only discovered the existence of the other when the mechanics on both teams (the mechanic is the member of a cheating team who is responsible for setting up the move) bumped hands while trying to past-post (switch after a win) chips.
The Italian outfit used a team comprising four members. Three of the team members would buy-in at the same roulette table with a stack of $1 chips, making sure that they each played different coloured chips. The final member of the team would stand opposite the table from the dealer and next to the wheel; this fourth member did not buy-in at all. The three players who had chips each bet a wager of $20, on two different numbers on two separate lay-out sections. All in all, the layout of the teams bets, taken together, meant that there would be 2 x $20 on two numbers in the first dozen (that is two numbers from 1-12), 2 x $20 on two numbers in the second dozen (13-24) and then 2 x $20 on two numbers in the third dozen (25-36). In total then, the team had $120 worth of wagers on the layout table, distributed relatively evenly, each individual $20 bet comprised of 20 $1 chips.
If one of the numbers placed came in, they simply left it alone. A winning stack would be paid out at 35:1, meaning that they made $700, of course if one number won; this meant that 5 of their numbers lost, this would cost them $100, but they would still be up in profit of $600 for that individual spin.
However, at the point that none of their numbers came in; they would begin the Roulette Slide Scam. Whichever player had placed the bet that was closest to the winning number in that round would just slide his stack across to the winning number before the dealer managed to put the dolly over it. This would only work if no other player had placed any chips on that number.
So, if the roulette ball lands on the number 6, and one of the members of the team had his chips on the number 8 square, he would quickly shift his chip stack onto the winning number. This took a lot of precision and excellent manual dexterity was needed. To aid them in this improbable move, they used a method of distraction to divert the dealer’s attention; this is where the fourth member of the team came into it. Stood as he was near the wheel, he would ask the dealer to either change up some chips, some advice on the rules, or anything else he could conceive of that would appear to be a legitimate question.
This move is one of the best types of cheat because players are able to perform the move more than once without attracting too much negative attention. As soon as the security staff began to appear suspicious the team would up and leave. On occasion, the team would increase the amounts that they played with, changing from $1 to $5 chips for example; the returns on such a bet were huge, $3,500 per spin!
