Online Casino Safety: Part 9 (Randomness)

safe online casinos

Ok, so as a hardened gambler you might not even bother to read these articles about online casino safety, taking risks for you is the name of the game, playing it safe is just not an option. Regardless of whether you are playing at an online casino, a sport betting website, online bingo hall, online poker room, etc, your primary mode of behaviour is always going to be a risk-taking one. And if you really want to win serious money, you will be taking the longest odds, the biggest risks, the most reckless decisions, the greatest pay-outs come with the greatest risk of loss after all. As a hardened gambler, you are probably getting excited just thinking about the risks. Many people find nothing more entertaining than going for the money, the bigger the win the better!

“IT’S NOT WHAT YOU DO IT’S THE WAY THAT YOU DO IT”:

If you are not a hardened gambler, as I suspect you won’t be if you are reading this, if you are new to the realm of online casinos, and you just want to play for entertainments sake (a win would be good but it is not the be all and end all for you) then you really should not be taking any ridiculously risky chances with your betting strategies and risk losing all your money in one shot.

There are masses of online gambling sites that cater just for players who are only after a bit of fun, and not the next million dollar jackpot, sites that do not require the player to make large one-off wagers, but allow them to make many small denomination wagers, of say $0.01 if you really wanted.

The best games for playing in really low denominations, the games that can be specifically tailored by the casinos for this purpose, are the slot machines. And, if you play on a slot machine with small denominations, but one that is linked up to a progressive jackpot, then you can still win big bucks, just not as much as you could if you were more risk taking, but then you would probably lose, as the majority of people do- it is only the winners names that are ever cited, the one person in a million who wins big! Remember that!

ONLINE GAMBLING FAUX-PAS:

Even the most professional of gamblers can get caught out, but this does not always arise from making a bad decision when it comes to placing bets, oh no. Given that the online gambling industry is a fairly recent development in the world’s economy, with thousands of online casinos vying for customers willing to part with their hard earned cash, it is safe to say that the majority of casino providers all have at the top of their wish-list the high-roll gamblers, those who have and spend, massive bankrolls.

But watch out, there are a lot of gambling providers that are not meeting their players’ expectations of a good service, some may be crooked, others simply mismanaged. And when playing at such a casino, even professional gamblers can get done over. If you are going to place massive bets, make sure that you put your money in a casino that has a good, long-standing (obviously not that long seeing as how the industry is fairly new, but say 3years and older as a benchmark) solid, reputation. Ones that have their shares traded on the stock exchanges of the global economy are surely a good bet, as are those that are accredited by various software providers, such as Playtech and Microgaming.

PLAY IT SAFE ONLINE:

The question of fairness when it comes to land-based slot machines has long been a subject much discussed by the majority of gamblers, so it has been since the inception of the slot machine, so it continues today. And now, with the advent of the online slot machine and its proliferation through the internet, the issue continues to be discussed in more and more mediums.

When playing a slot machine in a land based casino, there are a number of factors that are potentially misleading for the gambler, especially those who are not well informed on the issue of fair play and random number generators. Although it is actually illegal for a bricks-and-mortar casino to fiddle with their slot machines, it is certainly the case that some continue to pull the wool over the eyes of their customer base. Believe it or not, the safest place to play slot machines is actually online, there are more safety procedures in place, procedures that although are not legal are implemented because these casinos need to garner the trust of their clients in order to ensure they return.

At land based casinos, where there is not much competition, this is not so much the case; they can afford to fiddle the games a little if they are the only gambling providers in the area. Although both online and offline casinos are subject to independent auditor reports, these are less frequently carried out at a land-based casino than at an online casino- where audits happen about once a month. Incidentally, it is not a legal requirement for an online casino to employ an independent auditor, they do so to prove their trustworthiness in the online gambling industry, so before you play at any online casino, ensure that they have these regulations in place and that the audits are happening on a regular basis.

Online casinos usually undergo vigorous testing by independent auditors, as stated above, one important name in the field is the Technical System Testing (TST) group, and you will regularly see their crest on various online casino websites to show their accreditation.

RNG =Random Number Generators

For their games, online casinos will use a random number generator
(RNG) to determine the combinations that will be revealed on each spin/roll/hand (whatever game is being played). An RNG is a computer programme that controls the outcome of the games in a randomised fashion, they take account of various factors, which are pre-programmed and include; the statistics of each spin/roll/hand played, the number of coins that have been entered, the graphics, and a lot else besides. They are statistically accurate over time, and impossible to predict on an individual spin/roll/hand as the statistics play out over a given periods of time.

The RGN involves hard-coded instructions in the form of a computer programming language, these codes are fixed and do not change, they act as the parameters from which all other information is generated. There is no option that allows the RNG’s to be changed by the online casinos in order to favour them or to change player’s odds. They are provided for by third-party companies who have a vested interest in ensuring their sound reputation. The pre-programmed parameters will be constituent throughout the duration of the games play. It may get confusing when you try to understand how something pre-programmed can also be randomised, but it is within the structure of the parameters that the randomisation occurs.

For example, on each individual spin the reels will move in a random fashion, so if the odds are set that three cherries will come in 1in 100 spins, this is the fixed parameter, each spin will play the odds of 1 in 100 for cherries, the RNG do not take account of previous results in that each spin will always be set at 1 in 100 for cherries, so if cherries come in once, this does not then mean that the odds then become 1 in 99, they will always be 1 in 100. So this is evidence that the online casino is a safer bet than the bricks-and-mortar casinos.

With a bricks-and-mortar casino the pay-out percentages will change according to the particular casino that is hosting the slot machine, the payout rates can be as low as 82% and as high as 97%, but on average, land-based payouts are lower as the casino needs to pay for overheads. With an online casino, the money that they save on overheads is passed back to the player- even more of a reason to play online then.

The majority of online casinos now publish on their homepage the rate at which their slot machines payout; this will help you to choose which casino to play at. These pay-outs are again an average, and work out over time, so if you play at a machine with a 97% payout, this does not mean that you will get back 97% of your money, you could get back 200% or 0%, but over time they work out to a 97% return to all players collectively, with the casino making an average return of 3%, which goes towards running the site and profits.

With regards to the previous question of the fairness of online slot machines, it is more than conclusive that they are beyond a doubt, a lot fairer than land-based slot machines.

Clearly, there is never a guarantee that as a player you will ever win a game, this is not the point of the gambling experience; it is all in the excitement, of “will I won’t I?” But, when playing online cash machines, you can be sure that you will get good odds and consistency of fairness (obviously remembering that you have to check that the casino has the necessary auditors and third-party software providers).

So unless you are looking for a glitzy night out, your best bet when it comes to playing on slot machines, you should opt to stay at home and play from the comfort of your living room, or toilet, or larder, wherever your broadband wireless takes you!!
