The Tricks Casinos Play On Gamblers.

Obviously, when you are visiting a casino, unless you are the eternal optimist, you will be expecting to lose money- at the very least you would expect to pay-out some cash at the beginning. For a start, it will cost you money simply to play, you may need to eat while you are there, and if you have travelled to Las Vegas, or other casino venues, you may need a hotel room too.

But aside from these known expenses, there are several other ways in which you can be separated from your money, without ever realising that you have been the victim of (legal) tricks and scams that the casinos play on the unsuspecting gambler to make you spend more money than you otherwise would have.

If you are familiar with these tricks before you visit a casino, you stand yourself in good stead to avoid them, saving yourself money in the long-run, money that you can spend on more gambling!

CASINOS WANT YOU TO THINK MONEY IS CHEAP!!

Casinos do not want you to understand the value of money; they want you to forget, temporarily, the true cost. If you have ever visited a casino, either online or in real-life, you will be aware that they use chips to represent money, and do not actually operate with real currencies.

One of the reasons they use chips is to ensure that the real money is kept in a safe location, so that thieves cannot make of with it- if a thief steals some chips, they will not be worth anything.

But, another reason why casinos use chips is to do with psychology; it is one of the ways in which they distance gamblers from the truth that they are playing with real money. Symbolically, chips are not as mentally significant as actual money. When a gambler plays with chips, they are much less likely to think of themselves as playing with real money.

Even video poker and slot machines incorporate similar strategies, by changing the money you put in to the machine into electronic tokens. And electronic tokens are even further removed from real-money.

The key thing that you need to remember is that all these chips and tokens DO represent real-money, if you find the idea slipping from your mind then simply imagine something that you need in your life
(groceries, a TV...) and picture yourself buying it with the chip or token.

CASINOS WANT YOU TO LOSE TRACK OF TIME:

As well as hoping that you will forget the true value of money, casinos will also want to make sure that the games you play are fast paced, exciting and attention grabbing. Active leisure activities, those in which you need to interact and participate, will always make you lose track of time, as opposed to passive leisure activities, such as watching TV. This is because you need to focus your attention on active leisure pursuits and by doing so you stop focusing on the world beyond.

The casinos have good reason to try and make you forget about time, they want you to stay longer, so that you will spend more money.

If you have ever been in a casino, then you may have noticed the lack of clocks on the wall, and the lack of windows to the outside world, omitting these two features enhances the effects of the games, making double sure that you lose track of time.

Try to avoid this trap by bringing your watch with you and checking it whenever you remember.

CASINOS ARE INTENTIALLY FAST PACED!

As well as making you forget about time and money, those things that are often at the forefront of everyday life! Casinos also try to ensure that their games are played at the fasted pace possible. Croupiers are trained to deal at near-on supersonic speeds, the machines spin so fast it makes you sick and the dice ricochet so fast that they sound like gunshots...a slight exaggeration, but you get the gist...all this noise, speed and excitement combines to create an atmosphere that makes in-depth analysis impossible, you are forced to make snap decisions, you do not have time to think about how much you have spent, if the moves you are making are strategically sound, etc.

In order to slow the pace down a little, double check all your actions, do not feel bullied into rushing by casino staff or fellow gamblers.

THE DEMON DRINK:

A great feature of real-life casinos is that they offer you free drinks. But remember, nothing in life is free, and this free' drink might lead you to lose a whole lot of money. How? You may ask. Well, alcohol lowers your inhibitions, heightens risk-taking behaviours, and loosens your wallet!

You are much more likely to place that 'one more bet' when you are drunk, and the casinos are fully aware of this, and this is the only reason why they offer you free drinks, why else would a business give away their profits? The fact is they aren't! The seeming giveaway earns the global gambling industry millions, if not billions, of dollars every year.

Remember, the waiters and waitresses are trained to identify which gamblers are more risk-taking to start with, and if you fall into this category they will be targeting you with the alcohol, also, the more drunk they see a person getting, the more 'free' drinks they will ply them with.

To avoid falling into this trap, try to stay sober, if you cannot do this, and then at least try to keep some kind of awareness about you, and look after your friends too.

YOU AREN'T AS IMPORTANT AS THEY SAY YOU ARE!

Many casinos, if not all of them, run loyalty programmes, claiming that you are one of their most valued customers; they will offer you free games, drinks, food...but do not let the casinos make you feel like a VIP if you ever win one of their competitions. They do not really want you to leave with their money and once you win big they will pander to your every need, but only in an effort to make you stay with them to give them a chance to take their cash back off you. The best thing to do if you win a big amount is to walk away and never look back.

Beyond all these traps and pitfalls, the main reason for visiting a casino should be for entertainment purposes, keep this in mind and make sure you have fun, without making yourself bankrupt!
