Wimbledon 2010 Shows Why the US Government Should Legalise Online Gambling.

The national debt in the USA continues to grow on a daily basis, many people argue that legalising online gambling could provide a healthy source of tax revenue to help lift the country out of its national debt. Vern Buchanan, US representative for Florida agrees, and he cites an unusual example to illustrate the point:

This week, millions of sports fans from across the globe watched with a mixture of amazement and admiration at the Wimbledon tennis match that played out between John Isner and Nicholas Mahut, which lasted over 11 hours. The game has broken records at the annual tournament, being the longest match to have taken place throughout its entire history – Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament, first played in 1877!

Buchanan has used the record-breaking match as an example to illuminate a need for the regulation, and legalisation, of online gambling.

Writing on the social networking site, Twitter, Buchanan shared the little known fact that during the length of the game, the national debt in the USA rose by more than 1.5 billion dollars.

"Think Wimbledon tickets are expensive?" the Congressman tweeted. "Our National Debt has gone up by $1,729,000,000 during the Isner v. Mahut match #USA."

But Priceaterhousecoopers’ recent study has shown that, were internet gambling made legal in the US, the government would be able to claim more than $50 billion from tax, over the course of a decade. And still, many congressmen continue to reject plans to legalise the industry, that would aid a little the country clawing its way out of debt.

Plus, when you consider that the ban has done practically nothing to stop US citizens from gambling online, but has meant that the government has missed out on a source of revenue, the whole ban appears ill conceived and based on faulty convictions that make very little impact on the American psyche, the whole thing seems at least ridiculous, at most, seriously damaging to the economy.

Isher came out the overall winner in the historic match, winning  6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-3), after playing a mind-blowing 70 sets, winning 70-68 in the final set. Perhaps the congressmen wanting to change the regulations that ban online gambling need to show as much perseverance and determination as these two Isner and Mahut.
