Carps: Horn Bets

Many different types of bet can be placed in the game of craps, these range from the basic and come line bets, to the more difficult and risk-taking proposition bets.  A proposition bet will payout massively and will also have a huge house edge.  If you are in the mood to make a one roll proposition bet, and you want to increase your chances of winning, then you can combine the propositional bet with a ‘horn bet'. Surprisingly, the horn bet is not an actual bet unto itself, but a collection of other, simpler, bets. If you are a fan of the excitement of the one roll bet, but are not so fond of the odds, then you can reduce the chance of losing too many in a row by taking advantage of the horn bet. 

There are several variations of the horn bet; each type of bet incorporates only the ‘one roll bets'. Therefore you need to understand how the one roll bets operate:

• One roll bets are very simple bets. As implied by the name the bet is basically a guess at the result of the next roll of the dice.
• It is only possible to bet that the next dice roll will result in a 2, a 3, a 7, ‘any craps', an 11, or a 12.
• If the result is a 7, then the pay out will be 4 to 1.
• If the result is any craps then the payout will be 7 to 1.
• If the result is a 3 and an 11 then the payout is 15 to 1.
• And, if the result is for a 2 and a 12 then the payout will be 30 to 1!

Each of the results listed above is fairly unlikely to materialise, but by choosing the horn bet option then you are able to combine multiple bets together and thus increase your chances of winning.

In the its most basic form, the horn bet involves placing a £1 one roll bet on the 2, 12, 11 and 3. If you manage to get any of these numbers then you can win an amount roughly between £15-£30 but lose only £3 from your losing bets, thus you will be getting a large net win.

Another horn bet, the ‘horn high', involves placing a £1 one roll bet on a 2, 3, and 11, whilst at the same time placing a £2 on the 12 (which is the highest number- thus the name of the bet. The 12 offers the player a payout of 30:1 if it comes in, therefore is a 12 is rolled then you will win £60 but only be losing £3.  

Additionally, there are two more types of horn bet, the ‘horn high yo' and the ‘horn low'. The horn high yo consists of placing a £2 bet on the 11, plus a £1 bet on the other numbers. The horn low consists of placing a £2 bet on the 2 plus a £1 bet on the other numbers- the odds for the horn low are the same as they are for the horn high.

If you are a player who regularly wagers on the one roll bets then you are clearly a thrill seeker and a risk taker. If you combine these bets with the use of a horn bet then you will be increasing the pace of the already fast moving one roll bets, and this route will give you the most excitement out of the game.

BUT REMEMBER: the odds of the game are stacked against you if you use the horn bets, and if you do not have a large bankroll then you will be quick to find yourself without any money left. The age old advice given to gamblers is very apt here, set your limit before you begin to play and under no circumstances begin to chase your losses!!!
