Event 27: WSOP

The World Series of Poker is upon us again, and, as always, the tournament begins with the Casino Employees’ event. This year The World Series of Poker Casino Employees’ No-Limit Hold’em kicked off on the 27th of May. This leg allows casino employees who work the poker table to buy-in at $500 and get their chance at victory.

In 2002, the employees’ event was won by David Warga, who managed to conquer 272 fellow casino workers to win the $47,000, not bad for a day’s work!

For the win, David Warga was awarded the coveted WSOP bracelet in the event, and his first title; as with all these closed events in the WSOP, the inevitable discussion arose as to whether such events should be rewarded with such a coveted award. But, later in the same tournament, David Warga went on to win Event 27 and a second bracelet, as well as another $1,500. He goes down in the history of the WSOP as the first and only player to have won the Casino Employees’ event and an open event, too.

David Warga had been an employee at the Casino Arizona, where he worked as a dealer, following his win; however, he invested his winnings into real estate – taking a gamble of a different sort.

Having won two of the WSOP 2002 events, he decided to focus more on playing poker, giving up his position as dealer and playing online events, but also live tournaments. On the live circuit, his abilities did not play out as much as his WSOP wins had predicted, however, in 2010 he came 92nd in the global million tournament held by Party Poker, you may think 92nd would not be lucrative, but he walked away with $16,000.

He did much better online though, playing tournaments where buy-in prices varied between $24 and $1000. Having never played seven-card stud high-low in a casino, the game played in event 27 of the WSOP 2010, where he emerged the winner, of his victories in the WSOP 2010, he says:

"I've always been proud of that first bracelet, but some saw it as a little bit tainted [because it's not an open event]," he said. "So, to win an open event means a lot more to me. And, that it is the second one. There are not many players who have won multiple bracelets.

"It means so much," he continued. "I had very low expectations of actually winning it. I was very happy just make it into the money. And then to make it to the final table, I was ecstatic."

In the The World Series of Poker Casino Employees’ No-Limit Hold’em, Warga was up against formidable opponents on the final table, the aggressive played David Levi, as well as the much skilled player Katrina Jett. Finishing in third, Levi fought a hard battle in his attempt to win his first ever WSOP champion event, he may not have won a bracelet, but over the years he has made more than $500,000 from tournament events. Katrina Jett finished 4th, a position in which she has finished three times now. Chris ‘Indariva’ Tryba also had an epic battle on the final table, finishing 7th and still winning a massive $22,926! Other key players during the 2010 Event 27 leg of the WSOP where, 12th place finalist, Kevin MacPhee, 14th place finalist Blair Rodman, and Brandon Cantu, who finished in 17th place.
