Paying less for a greater return:
Participating in an online poker tournament, particularly at Texas Hold'EM, has several advantages. Firstly it can be very cheap, it can cost as little as £1.00 to pass through the qualifying rounds. The further along the tournament you manage to go, the more expensive the entrance fee will be. The entrance fee for the final stage in most online tournaments is between £150-£200. On the other hand, if you lose, before you manage to get to the final, all you would have lost is the entrance fee, which will not be as much as the final entry amount.
Online poker tournaments:
There are many different types of poker tournament, and there will be one to suit every poker player, even those who are not willing to sit through several hours of play. There are the sit & go tournaments which only include a limited number of players. The entrance fees are variable, depending on the number of participants and the amount they are willing to pay, but the normal starting price for most online gambling sites is £1.00. The advantage here is that the tournament is relatively short in comparison to the more prestigious tournaments, which involve hundreds or thousands of players.
After two or three tournaments of sit & go you would have passed a very enjoyable evening and you would probably not have spent too much money, and maybe even managed to win some. Who told you poker was expensive?
I talk again about sit & go tournaments further on in the article, but I wanted to draw your attention to them here because it was the type of tournament that got me into poker in the first place and I would warmly recommend it to those of you who are just starting out with internet poker.
Prestigious tournaments:
Among the attractions associated with online poker tournaments is the fact that you can pass the initial qualifying stages for the more prestigious tournaments played in real life, such as the World Series Of Poker (WSOP) or the World Poker Tour (WPT). Chris Moneymaker, the famous winner of the 2003 WSOP, passed through the qualifying stages online. Chris paid $39 for the entrance fee on a satellite tournament and this led to him winning a massive £2,500,000, not a bad investment by anyone's standards. It is not too late for poker players to aspire towards the same dream, because internet poker, especially Texas Hold'EM is still in its early years. Chris Moneymaker is the first world champion of online poker, but many people are going to follow in his path.
If you want to participate in a qualifying tournament, click on the links you will find on the home page of this website and choose the casino you wish to play at, subscribe to a daily qualifying tournament. In less than 5 minutes you will be ready to participate in the qualifiers.
Different types of online tournaments:
With regards to the world's most popular version of poker, Texas Hold'EM, there are various formulas that are employed for online tournaments. Among the principle variations we will discuss; the freeroll, the guaranteed, and the sit n' go. All these tournaments are open to players of any skill level.
The freeroll:
Freeroll is a multi-table tournament, with a minimum of 10 players. Freeroll tournaments do not have entrance fees. The winnings can be very modest, there can be many players and there are many starters. However, freeroll allows those of you who are new to poker tournaments to enter into a tournament atmosphere without losing money. It also allows new players to become accustomed to long poker games. Certain freeroll tournaments have specific requirements from players, like the accumulation of bonus points in place of the entrance fee. Most serious poker sites run events 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
The Guaranteed:
Again, this is a multi-table tournament, with a minimum of 10 players. The main characteristic of the guaranteed tournament is the winnings are fixed and guaranteed, regardless of the number of participants.
Certain types of guaranteed tournaments offer you the choice to "re-buy" or "add-on". This simply means that you will be allowed to buy more chips if you lose yours or that you can buy additional chips if yours are running out. This allows you to re-enter into the game once you have been eliminated, especially beneficial if you make a silly mistake. The "add-on" option is usually only allowed in the early stages of the tournament, before or during the first pause. The version Freezeout of the guaranteed tournament signifies that if you lose all your chips, you will definitely be eliminated.
The sit n' go:
A sit n' go tournament can either be a multi-table or a single-table game. The sit n' go tournament includes an import duty, whose sum constitutes the winners profits. Certain online poker sites allow players to create their own private sit n' go tournaments. This option makes it possible for you to play amongst friends, while being comfortably sat in front of the computer- you could play your friends who live next door, or on the other side of the world, but not America because their government does not like financial fraternisation amongst its citizens and the outside world.
