Even the most highly skilled poker players employ the use of checklists in order to prepare themselves for playing in prestigious tournaments and in order to continue to progress in their skill level.

Beginners need firstly to master the fundamentals of the game of poker, see the links below for information about starting out in poker, as there are some very useful methods discussed within the articles that will help you to master your game.

Once you have mastered the fundamental rules of poker, then it is necessary for you to continue to accumulate knowledge in order to be able to continue to progress. Because as the great player Doyle Brunson said, poker takes a few minutes to learn, but a lifetime to master.

The advice from the pros:
Phil Gordon gives his nuggets of wisdom for playing in the World Series of Poker:
1. Always play a tight game in the opening rounds.
2. Always think of the player with the button as being in the most privileged position.
3. Do not play hands that can easily be dominated.
4. Leave the pot with the least amount of money that you can manage.
5. Do not make gross errors.
6. Avoid bluffing when it is likely that nobody is going to fold if you do.
7. Arrive at the fourth level with a reasonable pot.
8. To always remember before each hand: "I'm playing a tight game of poker, aggressively and I take winning decisions"- This is a technique called self-talk and is used by many internationally acclaimed athletes, you may notice before watching a sport that players appear to be talking to themselves, it is a training technique!

Phil defines a good poker player as aggressive. If an aggressive player checks, this should be taken as a bad sign for you too. Playing aggressively helps you to win for two reasons; by having the best hand or by forcing other players to fold. A good player is courageous. In fact, it takes a lot of courage to place a large bet on a medium hand. Good players are not afraid to put all their chips into the line of sight if they believe it is necessary to do so. Good players are patient. Because the luck of the game is constantly turning and it is necessary to go into long and drawn out battles around the poker table. Good players are observant. It is necessary to detect the weaknesses of your opponents and then to exploit them for your own ends.

10 bits of advice from Patrick Bruel:
1. Do not play in a haphazard fashion, and play, play, play! You have to pay money in order to become a poker master.
2. Master the winning techniques.
3. Study your opponents.
4. Take your time before making any decisions.
5. Do not waste your chips. Select the hands you wish to play.
6. Be wary of playing with low value pairs. You need to calculate well your odds.
7. Be proportionate with your bets. You have to raise evenly. Vary your game.
8. Be daring and courageous.
9. Do not be emotional. Remain impassive and alert at all times.
10. Do not wait for a miracle, put the odds in your favour by making good selections.

Patrick defines different types of player as follows:
Broad liability: They are the worst type of player because they play nearly all their hands and very rarely raise.
Broad aggressive: They play a huge number of hands and make massive bets. You have to be wary because if these players are having a good run of luck they can be very dangerous.
The tight liability: They enter rounds very rarely and if ever they do, you can be sure that they have a very strong hand.
The tight aggressive: These are the best types of player because they consider carefully which hands to play, and they know how to strike hard and fast.

Dave Scharf's five finger list:
The thumb: big or large pot? If you have a strong hand pre-flop, a pair of aces for example, you have to bet hard and aggressively. In contrast, you should never jeopardise chips on a risky hand. After the flop, if the hand is improved, you have to continue to attack, but if the Turn or the River is decisive then you have to remain lenient in the amount you bet.
The index: what is the gaming style of my opponents? You have to evaluate the possibilities regarding the games of the other players according to the way they are using the communal cards.
The middle finger: What can my opponents do in this situation? While having observed the characteristics of your opponents you can evaluate what there reactions indicated regarding the situation they are in.
The next finger: you have to know how to remain humble and to be able to pull yourself out of a game at the moment that the risks come to outweigh the benefits.
The little finger: this is the last port of call when you no longer know what you are doing. You have to be able to avoid making major mistakes.

Here is some general advice regarding the issue of how to better know the cards of the game; card games:
1. Know the values of each hand
2. Evaluate the chances of being able to improve your hand during the different stages of a round.
3. Establish how much you are able to lose in order to know the values of the bets you should be placing.
4. Imagine that your opponents have the best possible hands.
5. Imagine what your opponents believe that they have.
6. Learn how to bluff successfully.
