Sports Betting Terminology

 

Accumulator: This consists of a multiple bet where you try to win on X amount of good results. For example, an accumulator of 4 out of 5 selections will mean that you win if you get 4 good results (equivalent to a 4:5).

Asian Handicap: The Asian handicap uses the rules of the classic handicap. A handicap of 2:1 signifies that a goal is added to the team that receives it.

At Home/Away: The first odds of the bet relate to the team that are playing at home, the second is thus on the team that are playing away.

Back: Buying a bet in a betting exchange. The contrary: Lay

Betting Exchange: A betting exchange allows you o propose bets and odds that are not otherwise allowed. You are the bookmaker. You can also bet on a sports-betting site online and but a bet that has been created by another gambler (back).

Bonus: An extra amount added for free to your player account on a sport-betting website. They are often offered by bookmakers when you register with them, and then additionally to act as a fidelity reward.

Bookmaker: The businesses that take your bets, usually sporting bets, and who pay you if you win. It is the bookmakers who fix the odds.

Capital: The amount of money that is placed on betting on the gamblers account (to augment your capital, make use of the bonuses).

Free bet: Is the same as a bonus.

Favourite: This is the team or player who is most likely to get a victory in the sporting event. They have the smallest odds in most events.

Goliath: a Goliath corresponds to 247 bets placed on 8 selections in different events. The bet has 28 doubles, 56 triples, 70 accumulators 4 flutters, 56 accumulators 5 flutters, 28 accumulators 6 flutters, 8 accumulators 7 flutters and one accumulator. At least 2 selection need to win in order to gain any money. Your winnings will be determined by the sum of the products of the different odds multiplied by your bet. ATTENTION: with 8 matches sectioned, if you bet £1 on a Goliath bet, £247 will be debited from your account! (You bet on the number of possible multiples with the selected matches).

Heinz: A Heinz corresponds to 57 bets placed on 6 selections in different events. The bet comprises 15 doubles, 20 triples, 15 accumulators 4 flutters, 6 accumulators 5 flutters and one accumulator. At least 2 of the selections should be winning ones in order for you to make any money. Your winnings are determined by the sum of the product of the different odds multiplied by your bet. ATTENTION: on a 6 selection, if you bet £1 on a Heinz, £57 will be taken from your account.

Lay: To sell a bet in a betting exchange. The opposite term: Back.

Live betting: simply means to bet in real-time.

Lucky 15: A lucky 15 corresponds to 15 bets carries out over 4 selections of different events. The bet comprises 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 triples and 1 quadruple. If only one of your selections wins, your consolidation winnings are re-invested to double the probabilities (null or non-runner). If all you selections win, a bonus of 10% will be added to the total winnings. Consolidation winnings are obtained only on the selection that won and that part of your bet to which it corresponds. Your winnings are calculated by the sum of the product f the different odds multiplied by your bet. ATTENTION: on 4 selected matches, if you bet £1 on the luck 15, £15 will be debited from your account.

Lucky 31: a Lucky 31 corresponds to 31 bets including 5 choices in different events. The bets compose of 5 simples, 10 doubles, 10 triples, 5 quadruplets and one accumulator. If only one selection wins, the winnings are re-invested in order to double your probabilities. If all 5 selections win, a bonus of 15% is added to your winnings. For each of the bets, the consolidation winnings are obtained only on the winning portions of the bet. ATTENTION: on 5 selected matches, if you bet £1 on the Lucky 31 bet, £31 will be taken from your account.

Margin: commission conceived by the bookmakers. In general between 6% and 16% of the bets. Details of calculation; Margin= (1/odds1 +1/odds2+...+1/oddsN)-1.

Multiple: see combination.

Odds: This represents the amount of winnings in the case that your bet is a winning one. The favourite (that one with the most chances of winning) has, in general, the smallest odds. Inversely, the outsiders have the largest odds. If you bet on a small odd, you have more chance of winning, but the amount you win will also be smaller.
There are 3 types of odds:
1. American Odds: (a positive or negative number; -150 or 200 for example). Odds of -150= you have to bet 150 in order to win 100. Odds of 200= you win 200 if you bet 100. Profit for the positive odds= bet x 100/ (-odds). Profit for negative odds= bet x 100/odds.
2. European Odds: (a number such as 2.75 or 8). Profit= bet x (odds-1). If you bet £10 and win a bet with odds of 3, your profit is= 10 x (3-1) = £20.
3. Fractional/English odds: (a fraction, e.g. 1/3 or 4/1). Profit= bet * odds. So if you wager £9 and win with odds of 1/3 you profit= 9*1/3=3.

Over: bets on the "more than" X goals in a match.

Outsider: The team that is least expected to win.

Patent: a Patent corresponds to 7 bets on 3 selections in different events. The bet comprises of one simple for each selection then 3 doubles and 1 triple. It is sufficient to win on only one selection in order to generate any winnings. Your winnings are calculated according to the sum of the products of the different odds, multiplied by your bet. ATTENTION: on 3 matches selected, if you bet £1 on a patent £7 will be debited from your account.

Probabilities: the percentages representing the chance of a victory.

Peer-to-Peer: this is synonymous to the betting exchange.

Simple: a simple bet is a bet that carries on one result for one event. Your choice has to win in order for you to get any money.

Super Yankee: A Super Yankee corresponds to 26 bets holding over 5 selections on different events. The bets comprise of 10 doubles, 10 triples, 5 accumulators on 4 flutters and one accumulator. At least two of your selections need to win in order for you to get any money. Your winnings will be determined by the sum of the products of the different odds, multiplied by your bet. ATTENTION: on 7 selected matches, if you place a bet of £1, £26 will be debited from your account.

Spread Betting: Betting on the number of actions that will happen during a sporting encounter. For example, on the number of goals on a football match.

Super Heinz: A Super Heinz corresponds to 120 bets carried out over 7 selections on different events. The bet comprises of 21 double, 35 triples, 35 accumulators and 4 flutters, 21 accumulators and 5 flutters, 7 accumulators and 6 flutters and one accumulator. At least two of your selections need to win in order for you to reap any rewards. Your winnings are determined by the sum of the products of your odds multiplied by the amount of your bet. ATTENTION: on 7 selected matches if you bet £1 in the Super Heinz £120 will be debited from your account.

Sure Bet: A technique that permits you to realise a "sure bet" risks nothing and wins on every count.

Triple: the triples function on the same principle as the doubles, except that the selection is coupled in 3's. So if you go triples on 5 selections, you have 10 bets (10 possible triples with 5 matches) and win when you have three good results. Your winnings are determined by the sum of the odds multiplied by the value of your bet. ATTENTION: on 5 matches selected if you bet £1, £10 will be debited from your account.

Trixie: a Trixie corresponds to 4 bets carries out on three different events. The bet comprises of 3 doubles and 1 triple. At least two of your selections need to win in order for you to get any money.

Underdog: this is the same as outsider.

Value Bet: is a method for selecting bets. The gambles realises his proper calculation of probabilities. Only wager here when you have detected an error in the bookmakers calculations.

Winnings: Amount won - amount wagered.

Yankee: Corresponds to an 11 bet carried out over four selections in different events. The bet comprises of 6 doubles, 4 triples and one accumulator. At least two of your selections need to win in order for you to make any money. Your winnings are calculated by the sum of the product of the different odds, multiplied by your bet. ATTENTION: for 4 selected matches if you bet £1 on a Yankee £11 will be debited from your account.
