February 11th, 2023: BetFred, a leading UK-based casino, and bookmaker is making a bold move into the United States. The company has announced that it’s officially launched in Maryland after the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) approved the mobile sports wagering license of the operator.
With this license, BetFred Sports can accept real money bets in the state after a successful test run. BetFred Sports is the eighth operator to be granted a license in the state.
BetFred Sports is the eighth sportsbook operator in the state
BetFred is the eighth mobile bookmaker in Maryland, where sports betting has been legal since November 2021. For its stateside operations, the company partnered with the Frederick-based off-track betting company Long Shot for its retail and online sports betting services. As part of the application process, BetFred hosted a controlled demonstration last February 7 of its mobile sports wagering platform.
During the demonstration, bettors joined the live wagering with representatives from the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission observing the process. The team ensured that BetFred complied with all the requirements and procedures and that the betting systems functioned properly. As a result, and based on the results of the successful demonstration, the Commission decided to offer BetFred a license. In addition, all proceeds from the four-day demonstration procedure have been donated to the Community Foundation of Frederick County.
The Commission expects that BetFred isn’t the last operator to apply for a license to operate in the state. More mobile bookmakers will likely join Maryland’s wagering market. According to state law, the condition can accept up to 60 licensed online wagering entities, and there are already a few bookmakers in the pipeline, including SuperBook. In addition to BetFred, the other bookmakers operating in the state are FanDuel, Barstool Sportsbook, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, and PointsBet.
BetFred is looking forward to a great partnership
The BetFred team is optimistic about the company’s future in the US and its partnership with Long Shot. Bryan Bennett, Betfred Sportsbook Chief Operating Officer, shared that they’re “excited to open our seventh retail sportsbook in the United States and could not be happier to do so with the Long Shot’s team”.”
Mr. Bennet added that they are “forward to leveraging Betfred’s 50 years of bookmaking experience to provide a first-class betting experience to the bettors of Frederick County and across Maryland”.
Long Shot is also excited to bring mobile and retail sports betting to Maryland and Frederick County with the help of BetFred Sports. According to Long Shot’s CEO, Alyse Cohen, the new license will bring new jobs and support the state’s education fund.
In addition, she added that the “state-of-the-art permanent facility opening in early 2023 will be the first and only 100% woman-owned sportsbook in Maryland.”
