BGC Announces Successful Safer Gambling Week Campaign in 2022

March 12, 2023: The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), the UK betting and gaming sector’s industry body, announced a successful run of its Safer Gambling Week last October. Based on collected data, there was a significant increase in the use of Safer Gambling tools and engagement through social media.

In a statement, the Council stated that thousands of gamblers had set deposit limits on their casino accounts, and impressions on their social media platforms have also increased. The BGC reports that there were 30 million impressions via Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, an increase of 21%. compared to 2021 figures.

More players use Responsible Gambling tools, better engagement

Safer Gambling Week was a campaign last October to raise awareness of problem gambling and Responsible Gambling. It was a cross-industry initiative to promote safer gambling in the UK. The Betting and Gaming Council, the Lotteries Council, the Bingo Association, and the Bacta spearheaded it. According to the BGC, Safer Gambling Week is “an annual cross-sector initiative bringing together the UK and Irish regulated betting and gaming industry – including bookmakers, amusement arcades, bingo clubs, casinos, and online gaming operators – with charities and stakeholders to encourage safe and responsible play.”

In addition, there was an increase in the number of accounts that added deposit limits. According to BGC, around 200,000 different versions applied for deposit limits. Operators see a rise of 12.5% compared to last year’s data. In addition, 60% of the players that applied for the service did that for the first time. Finally, BGC also shared that casino players using reality checks or alerts increased by 300%. Reality checks are helpful online tools that remind players of their session time when gambling online.

For this campaign, the organizers conducted training and information dissemination activities. In addition, they also work with players and the general public to spread the word about safe gambling. During the campaign, the crowd was encouraged to share their social media posts and other digital materials to increase awareness of safe gambling.

Based on the organizers’ statement last week, the Safer Gambling Week campaign succeeded. According to BGC, the week-long campaign generated 30 million impressions on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. In addition, the campaign increased engagement to 21% compared to last year’s figures.

BGC pleased with the results and campaign

The BGC team is happy with the campaign’s results, with its chief executive, Michael Dugher, praising its positive impact. He shared that the movement continues encouraging players to use responsible gambling tools offered by licensed operators. He further shared that these gambling tools continue to grow in popularity, and millions of players now benefit from them. According to Mr. Dugher, these tools help the regulated gambling industry stand out.

In the same statement, Mr. Dugher also warns about the risks offered by the black market or the unregulated gambling operators. These operators offer questionable betting services and may not provide the necessary protection for players. With the success of the Safer Gambling Week campaign, the BGC team is now looking forward to this year’s edition, which aims to promote the same objectives.
