Billion Dollar Lottery Win for One Lucky American
A lucky player has won a billion-dollar lottery prize for the US Mega Millions draw. At odds of more than one in 302 million, it’s the 3rd largest prize to have ever been won in the US!
The winner bought the ticket at a supermarket in Detroit, Michigan. They have yet to come forward. Do they even know they won? Who knows, but if you bought a ticket from Kroeger on Grand River Avenue in Detroit’s Novi district, and you haven’t checked it, get checking now. If you have checked, check again!
It is the 18th Mega Millions jackpot won in Michigan since the game started back in 2002 (1996 if you go by its previous name, “The Big Game”), with the last Michigan win happening on the 13th of October 2017.
The prize has been growing since September 2020. At $1.05bn, it’s the 3rd largest prize ever on offer from a US lottery. The top spot goes to the 13th of January 2016 Powerball draw, with a prize of $1.586bn (wow!). The second spot going to another Mega Millions draw on the 23rd of October 2018, for $1.537bn.
But Saturday’s win is the 2nd biggest single win in US history. The 2018 win was split between 3 winners.
After-tax, the $1.05bn win (~£767.78m) is worth $761.8m cash (£557m), so the winner isn’t quite a billionaire, but not far off!
The winning numbers for the 22nd of January draw were 4, 26, 42, 50 and 60. The gold Mega Ball was 24.
Now, is it just me or does there seem to be a pattern of jackpot wins in October and January? My top tip if you want to win the Mega Millions or Powerball: play on the 13th of January or October!
A billion-dollar lottery win is a truly life-changing amount of money. What would you do with a win like that?
