Raging Rhino

This is an interesting theming! Just as the rhino tragically and finally dies out (please do some campaigning on stuff like this if you love these animals, even if it’s only signing a petition!), it features in this African wildlife featured Raging Rhino slot from WMS.

WMS games aren’t such a high profile name in the industry as the likes of Microgaming or Play’n Go, but they actually have a long history serving the American market from their Chicago base. They make a lot of casino machines and real-life games in cabinets, and – like every slot company – have had to go into the online video slot market as all the customers moved there.

They’ve made the move with aplomb, and recent figures from a trusted industry audit site suggest that they have around 2% of the total games in UK casino sites, with around 1% of the games in lobbies. They’ve done some big titles, especially brand and movie tie-ins like Monopoly Grand Hotel, and Spartacus Gladiator of Rome.

Raging Rhino Slot is one of their most popular games, still riding high four years after its 2015 release, and features a multi-win system that gives more than 4,000 pay lines played out over six reels.

Should you take that carbon-heavy flight to the African wildlife parks to see this wonderful creature though?

The Facts and Figures

Six reels are unusual, and it gives us a bigger playing field of 24 symbols rather than the usual 15. This allows the Win system to offer such a high number of possible pays, hitting a big old 4,096 pay lines.

We know why slot designers do this. They think that customers will see that there are hundreds or even thousands of ways of making winning combinations and, as a result, think that this makes winning more likely. Sadly, it does not, so don’t fall for it – a one-pay line three-reel slot is usually just as likely to pay out as one with thousands of combos.

That’s measured by the theoretical return to player, which here is 95.9%, slightly below the usual industry average, but only by a tiny amount.

The top prize is certainly attractive, paying out 60,000 coins with bets that range from 0.4 to 60 coins. For UK players that should mean the opportunity to win up to £60,000 from betting between 40p and £60.

Like a lot of slightly older games, Raging Rhino slot uses Flash, which you need to keep updated on your device, as well as JavaScript and HTML5 to deliver its thrills. You can play it on mobiles, tablets and desktops.

How to Play Raging Rhino Slot

Raging Rhino slot

There’s a very standard control set-up on this game, with all your buttons on the bottom of the screen.

At the far left, a menu option gives you more information. To the right of that, there’s the auto-play control. Next, the pay lines window followed by the bet multiplier and the total bet amount, which give you your total bet. Wins and message are displayed in the next window with the spin button completing the set.

Payouts

  • Six reels mean a slightly different paytable.
  • All high paying symbols payout from pairs.
  • Hyenas (?) and crocodiles pay the same scale. Leopards and gorillas pay as a pair. Rhinos pay the most.
  • Lower down the pays are the usual card sets, paying off from sets of three.
  • Nines and 10s pay the same. Jacks and Queens are paired, and kings and aces pay the same set of rewards.
  • There are also wilds and scatters on the reels.
  • The wild is an African scene.
  • The scatter is a diamond – a blood diamond perhaps – and it pays out the jackpot for a full set of six.

Bonus Games

The wilds in the base game stand in for every sign except the bonus scatter – called the feature symbol in this game. They also appear in the bonus free spin games, but they don’t appear on the first or sixth reels in this feature.

There’s one major feature on Raging Rhino, and it’s our old favourite the free spins round.

There are a lot of them, awarded by 3 to 6 scatters, which give players 8, 15, 20, and 50 spins.

In the free spins round the same rules apply, so you can retrigger the feature.

Wilds that appear in the four central reels in the free spin round are turned into double or treble sized wilds when they appear in winning combos.

The Verdict

This game is traditional but with a twist.

Companies who have a long history in the business like WMS (the game is also delivered by Williams Interactive) can tend to be a bit conservative. They make games for cabinets and for the old casino markets as much as they make them for the online market. This can make the design feel a little staid.

That’s the case here. This is all a matter of taste of course, and this might be just the style of graphics that you light, but it feels a bit old fashioned to us.

But beyond those aesthetics, there’s certainly nothing to complain about with Raging Rhino. Six reels is a nice change, as is the more than 4,000 pay lines (though please remember that more pay lines don’t mean more wins).

The gameplay is delivered nicely, on a well-designed screen, and everything works just as it should, with good help and information provided.

The bonus game is simple and to the point, and can deliver major wins. Look out for those diamonds when you’re in the hunt for jackpots!

This is a decent game that could become a favourite if the style, theming, and sound is to your taste and luck goes your way. We weren’t joking about supporting conservation work either, so go and sign a petition before you head to your favourite online casino site and give these rhinos a roam.
