Gamstop Successfully Launched #TakeBackControl2022 Campaign

October 11th, 2022: Responsible gambling initiatives have been the backbone of regulation in the United Kingdom. For the last few years, the gambling industry has seen several changes in how games are designed and marketed or how advertisements are worded.

Now, a new and successful initiative made its way online thanks to Gamstop, a leading organization in the United Kingdom. A non-profit and independent organization, Gamstop has successfully launched the country’s first-ever self-exclusion awareness campaign with clubs and sports associations.

#TakeBackControl2022

Using the hashtag #TakeBackControl2022, Gamstop takes the lead in the campaign to promote responsible gambling among players. The organization partnered with other industry stakeholders to improve the campaign’s results and reached over 2.6 million people on social media last September 15th.

In a statement, Gamstop shared that the campaign aims to raise awareness of its services in time for the World Cup in Qatar this year. According to sports officials, the Cup will start on November 20th. Fiona Palmer, CEO of Gamstop, shared her excitement and optimism in an interview, saying they’re “very grateful to all our partners who took part with us on social media to support the campaign using the #TakeBackControl2022 hashtag”.

She added that by sharing information about the organization with their followers, they join the campaign to inform and educate audiences about self-exclusion and where they can find help. Joining Gamstop in the campaign are the Crystal Palace Football Club, the Professional Cricket Association, and the Professional Players Federation are among the players’ bodies that join the campaign. Other sports associations are Sutton United, Luton Town FC, Walsall FC, and Oldham Athletic.

What is Gamstop?

Gamstop is a non-profit organization operated by The National Online Self-Exclusion Scheme Limited. As one of the respected stakeholders in the industry, Gamstop helps casino players control their online gambling activities. Interested players can sign up for the service, and once approved, they can no longer access gambling sites and apps operating with a remote license from Great Britain. Traditionally, the self-exclusion services will last for a week, a month, six months, or one year. GameStop’s self-exclusion service is free and available to residents within the United Kingdom only.

To register, interested players must submit their current address, postcode, date of birth, and email or mobile numbers used in the past.

Problem gambling is a serious concern in the UK and other countries. While the problem gambling rates in the UK remain low, there were a few recommendations and suggestions to overhaul some industry policies and regulations. In recent years, there have been calls to overhaul the gambling industry, including the need to integrate affordability checks, max betting amounts, and the proper wording in advertisements. And Gamstop is one organization that takes the lead in protecting players’ welfare.

In July 2022, Gamstop registered over 300,000 self-exclusions since its start in 2018.
